The women’s football European Course is in full swing. You can find out all the important news about the tournament here.
Switzerland has been the center of European football since July 2. For the first time, the country expects a European women’s championship. 16 national teams compete against each other in eight cities to win the continental title.
Switzerland is looking forward to the quarter -finals against Spain – and Bern is already planning the celebration. After the European Championship duel in the Wankdorf Stadium, the night in the capital is to become the day, regardless of how the game ends.
“The outstanding performance of the Swiss, regardless of the outcome of the game, is celebrated in the city of Bern with a free night,” said the city administration. Gastronomy businesses are allowed to host their guests in interiors all night. The fan zone on the Bundesplatz also stays open for longer-until 00:30 a.m.
The Swiss will meet world champions Spain on Friday evening (from 9 p.m. in the live ticker at T-Online). The roles before the kick -off is clear: the Spaniards are considered favorites. But the late balance of Switzerland against Finland in the last group game sparked great hopes in the country.
UEFA director Nadine Kessler demands more games in large arenas in view of the viewer response at the women’s European Championship. “People deal with tickets, try to get some somehow into the stadium,” said VfL Wolfsburg’s former European champion in a dpa conversation. “We simply have to put the bar again every time, also set signs with larger stadiums – and also fill them again.” Women’s football is “absolutely” ready.
The largest arena at the European Championship in Switzerland is the 34,250 spectator St. Jakob-Park in Basel. The final will also take place there on July 27th. The smallest stadium is in Sion (7,750). The German Football Association has selected for its 2029 Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hanover, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich and Wolfsburg application.
“22 of the first 24 matches were sold out. This is a rarity in women’s football so far, even at a World Cup,” said Kessler after the preliminary round.
Norway’s national team faces a special opportunity: At the European Championship quarter-finals in Geneva against Italy on Wednesday (from 9 p.m. in the live ticker at T-Online), the first semi-finals are waving to a big tournament since the 2013 final participation.
Captain Ada Hegerberg emphasized that this was an “incredibly big moment” for the team. Huge energy and good cohesion have been developed. “We want to take the chance to come to the top 4 in Europe,” said the striker. “That would be incredibly large.”
Norway had confidently qualified for the knockout round in Group A with three wins in Group A, even if the team was not completely convincing. Offensive player Caroline Graham Hansen pointed out the challenge in the quarter -finals: Italy was a “hard” opponent. However, one has every chance of “playing a good game”. The possible semi -finals are great motivation for the selection.
