Tennis icon Boris Becker would very much support a collaboration between Alexander Zverev and Toni Nadal.
“I’ll put my thumb up. If it is true that Toni Nadal is the new coach of Sascha Zverev, then he did everything right,” said the 57-year-old in podcast with Andrea Petkovic. Toni Nadal, uncle and long-time coach of the resigned Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal would be a “top election”.
On Monday, the Nadal Academy in Mallorca posted training pictures by Tokyo Olympic champion Zverev on Instagram for the first time, and a short video of a unit was also shown on Tuesday. The 28-year-old has so far been trained by his father Alexander Senior, and again and again he had consulted more coaches in the course of his career. It is not known whether he is getting short -term input with Nadal short -term input or long -term collaboration.
“He knows how to win Grand Slams. He has already won every Grand Slam as a coach. Toni is washed with all the water,” said Becker: “I find the combination totally exciting. I wish that it will be so.”
Should Nadal really become the new German number one trainer, according to Becker, a “hard Spanish school” would wait for Zverev. “Toni is a discipline fanatic,” said the three-time Wimbledon winner: “He expects punctuality and respect for the entire tennis.”
In addition to collaboration with Toni Nadal, Becker also sees a possible mentor role from Rafael Nadal as a positive impulse for Zverev. “When Rafael’s Nadal talks about Tennis, Sascha Zverev also has to listen and believe him,” said Becker.
Zverev had already failed in the first round in Wimbledon and then spoke openly about mental problems. He also announced a week -long break and canceled his previously planned participation in the tournament in Gstaad, which is currently underway.
