The Wimbledon final is followed with high tension. But the mood is temporarily exuberant in the ranks.
A strange incident caused a sensation in the Wimbledon final: In the second set between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, a champagne cork ended up on the Center Court-just behind the Sinner.
At 4: 6, 2: 1, the world ranking list from Italy interrupted his serve, raised the cork and handed it over to the referee chair. The scene immediately triggered unrest in the ranks. Referee Alison Hughes reacted immediately and addressed the audience with a loudspeaker: “Ladies and gentleman, please do not let champagne cork pop if the players want to open.” The spectators acknowledged the incident with a loud built against the cause.
The fact that champagne bottles are regularly uncorked at the traditional tournament is nothing new – the loud “plop” is almost part of the atmosphere on the Center. But when the cork flies in the middle of the game, the fun stops. Similar incidents had already occurred in the past.
