It used to be for the elderly, but nowadays he is very hip: the 45-kilometer car. More and more often the moped car can be seen on the Brabant roads. In five years the number in our country grew by almost 40 percent to 23,666 pieces. Almost a doubling.
Although the moped car is particularly popular in and around Amsterdam, they are increasingly common in Brabant. In two in three municipalities of Brabant, the number of moped cars has increased over the past five years.
Especially in Son en Breugel and Waalre, the 45 km car is increasingly popular. This is apparent from an analysis of mobility platform Micromobiel.nl based on CBS figures.
Compared to the number of inhabitants, most of them drive around in Hilvarenbeek and Deurne. Relatively speaking, Goirle has the least. Breda and Roosendaal also score relatively low. That is remarkable because the image exists that they tour the most in the cities.
What is a moped car?
A moped car is also called ’45-kilometer car ‘. And a moped car is indeed a maximum of 45 kilometers per hour, but not every 45 km car is also a moped car.
For example, even smaller vehicles are intended as an invalid vehicle that in some cases also reach 45 km per hour. No driver’s license is needed for those vehicles, while you have to have at least a moped license for a moped car. You don’t have to pay road tax for a moped car.
Fewer mopeds
Where the moped car is on the rise, we see the moped less and less in the street. Since 2020, the number, apart from farming villages Alphen-Chaam, Moerdijk and Zundert, has fallen everywhere in Brabant. “That cannot be seen separately from the introduction of the helmet obligation for mopeds in 2023,” explains Breukelman. “Young people in particular did not like that. Since then we of course see the rise of the Fatbike, but the moped car industry has also clearly benefited from this.”
