The trainer of the German U21 has a clear opinion on the widespread reports before the final defeat against England.
Antonio di Salvo does not see the rumors of change around Nick Woltemade as the cause of the lost European Championship final against England (2: 3 NV) – but the time of publication also caused displeasure with the U21 coach. “Such topics are part of the business. This story was not the reason for the defeat,” said the 46-year-old in an interview with Sports Illustrated Germany: “Nevertheless, it is a shame if there is more about transfer rumors before a final than about the game.”
Less than 48 hours before the final at the end of June in Bratislava, both Sky and the picture had reported that the young national player from VfB Stuttgart agreed to change a summer with the German football record champion Bayern Munich. The topic “didn’t really” bother his team, said di Salvo: “If so, then Nick dealt.”
He had “spoken to Woltemade before the game,” continued Di Salvo: “He told me that the conversations in the background had been running for a long time and that he was only at the final with his head. It was ticked off for me.” At the European Championships, Woltemade had scored six goals in the first four games, in the final against the English the 23-year-old had stayed without a goal.
