After Diogo Jota’s tragic accident, FC Liverpool honors him with a special gesture: his number number should no longer be awarded.

FC Liverpool does not want to award the deceased striker star Diogo Jota from now on. The measure applies not only to the professional team, but all levels of the association. “By withdrawing this number, we make it immortal – and thus unforgettable forever,” said Liverpool’s sports director Michael Edwards in a message. Jota will “be our number 20 forever”.

After consultation with Jota’s widow, who visited the Liverpool family on Friday, they decided to take this step. “I believe that this is the first time in the history of the Liverpool Football Club that such an honor will be given to an individual. So we can say that this is a unique tribute to a unique, wonderful person,” continues Edwards.

With this honor, one not only appreciates Jota’s “immeasurable contribution” for the success of the Reds, but also “the deep personal influence” that Jota had on his teammates, colleagues and fans, the statement said.

Jota died in the early morning hours of July 3 in a car accident together with his brother André Silva. The two footballers’ car had strayed from the street on a motorway in Spain, crashed into a guardrail and caught fire. Any help came too late for the brothers.

Jota switched from the Wolverhampton Wanderers to FC Liverpool in 2020. With the club he won the league cup twice, once the FA Cup and the English championship last season.
