After the defeat against Jannik Sinner, the 38-year-old speaks at a press conference. He makes a clear announcement – and chooses unexpectedly open words about himself.
Wasn’t that the last match by Novak Djoković in Wimbledon? After its clear semi-finals, the “Djoker” surprisingly clearly excluded an early career end. “Hopefully it wasn’t my last game on the Center Court. I do not intend to end my Wimbledon career today,” said the 38-year-old after the three-set defeat against Jannik Sinner: “I plan to come back at least again.”
Djoković had left 3: 6, 3: 6, 4: 6 against the world ranking on Friday in three sets, the seven -time tournament winner had to deal with physical problems, a thigh injury was a problem for him from the beginning of the third set. How much he also takes care of his body, “reality now meets me, in the past year and a half, like never before,” said Djoković. This is difficult to accept, because “when I’m fresh, when I’m fit, I can still play really good tennis.”
The Serb had a lot of praise for the new tennis tip in Sinner and Alcaraz-and spoke plainly about their own performance: “These boys are young, fit, focused, and I feel like I was going into this match with half-empty tank. And so you can’t win,” the 24-time Grand Slam winner admitted. “That’s how it is. I have to accept that and make the best of it.”
And further: “It is only this physical aspect that bothers me. You are there. You want to play. You are determined. But then the body doesn’t want to hear. That’s it. That is what you can say about it.”
