“Everything for the club,” says NAC supporter Riny while sweating the sweat from his forehead. Together with dozens of fellow fans, he is working this week in the Rat Verlegh Stadium in Breda to ‘click crates’, the sustainable surface of the new football field to be constructed. “It saves the club 50,000 euros!”
The sun is already high in the sky when the afternoon shift is relieving the morning shift. From seven o’clock in the morning, three teams work in the home port of NAC. They are all supporters who give their club a hand with the realization of a new, sustainable field.
“Together we put the surface for the new field here,” says supporter Riny Heimans. “They are a kind of decking, they call them crates, which we click together with white strips. There will be another cloth on that and then the sand and grass will soon be. This system will arrange the entire watering and drainage.”
“We create this at NAC solidarity and save 50,000 euros.”
Riny is one of the dozens of supporters who responded to a call from NAC. By having this work done by its own supporters, the club saves a lot of money. “Seventy -four men have signed up in a short time,” says Leon Aerssens, facility manager of the Breda club. “That is typically NAC. I think we still have to disappoint people, because it is much faster than expected.”
“We have placed the call for two reasons,” he continues. “To create a little togetherness, but especially because we, as a NAC, reduce the costs by 50,000 euros. We don’t have to let a company do that. And you see, the supporters are enthusiastic and enjoy a part of the project.”
“They have to straighten the crates, otherwise we will soon have a crooked field.”
A project that is sustainable. The crates that the supporters click together are the so -called infiltration crates or water -storing crates. These are a kind of plastic decking that are placed underground to temporarily save rainwater and slowly hand over to the bottom. They help prevent flooding and can also contribute to supplementing the groundwater. And in the winter months it can also heat the field lightly.
The afternoon team of supporters also works under the watchful eye of the contractor, Huijbregts wants to be concentrated and steadily on. “Very good, very good,” he says. “Those guests have to be careful that they stay nice and straight. Otherwise the field will be skewed and we don’t want that of course.”
“Yes, things are going well,” says a supporter who picks up a crate together with his size. “We have almost finished a row. The crates are not heavy, so that is fine. I work so that NAC can keep the money in the wallet. Everything for NAC, hey!”
