Danny van Poppel from Moergestel received a yellow card in the Tour de France on Monday. He received it for his share in the fall in the last kilometer of the stage.

The third stage of the Tour from Valenciennes to Dunkirk was hectic. There were several falls. In the last corner before the finishing line, Van Poppel caused the fall of Ballerinie and Penhoët.

Van Poppel became eighth but was eventually returned to 36th place for punishment. He also received a yellow card. The rider of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe saw a lot of hectic. “It was really not normal. This is the tour, nobody brakes for each other. This was really very dangerous,” he tells the NOS.

Third yellow card
“Whether it was too dangerous today? That is a bad excuse. But if you just look at the last kilometer, it is of course not top. The street waves from left to right and everyone is looking for the shortest road. Everyone sprints straight ahead and then all spaces close, then there will be a fall.”

For Van Poppel it is his third yellow card of this season. The yellow card was introduced early this year to make cycling safer. Danny van Poppel was the first male rider who received a yellow card. He had hindered a rider during the sprint of the second stage of the Tour Down Under. He also received a yellow card during the sixth stage in Uae Tour.

Suspension at more cards
A first yellow card during a course money just like football as a warning. Only with a second yellow card there are consequences. Then the rider is set out of the course. And follow a seven -day suspension. Get three yellow cards within thirty days, the suspension will be extended by two weeks. Six yellow cards in a year is good for a suspension of thirty days.

Three other cyclists also received yellow cards for causing falls.
