The traveling art project proves that the Drentsche Aa is a rich source of inspiration for artists Stream in the picture of the Drents Schildersgenootschap (DSG). More than 300 works of art have been made, with the winding stream as a radiant centerpiece. It already yielded a nice book, a large exhibition on Nienoord estate, but now also an exhibition in Assen, with dozens of works in its own DSG gallery.

Nineteen artists from the Visual Arts Association Drenthe show their view there on the age -old Beek, who meanders through Drenthe and who they looked for a year in all its forms. The artists pulled from source to mouth, packed and packed with painting material, or only with sketchbook. And all in four different seasons. The result is an impressive collection of paintings, drawings, statues and graphs.

Since April there are 150 works of Stream and image on the Nienoord estate in Leek. With the exhibition in Assen, in the own DSG house gallery on the second floor of Vanderveen, another 70 painting works can be admired. One of the participants is painter Fokke Rijkens (64), chairman of the Drenthe Schildersgenootschap.

How do you get a picture of it as a painter?

“What I liked is that you are painting the landscape, if you sit there yourself, experience much stronger than when you look at it as a painting. You are in the middle of it. I always call it ‘a little fishing’. You are slowly going more and more relaxed. You go to the landscape. And so you go to different locations, in different times. special. “

Did you get to know the Drentsche Aa area better because of this?

“I actually lived at the end of the Drentsche Aa, near Roderwolde, but I have just moved to Assen. That part at Roderwolde, I knew that, as the spur of the Drentsche Aa. And yes, then this is very special, if you then go to the source, as with Elp, and to Deurze.”

What is your favorite place?

“I find that very difficult to choose from. But what was the best thing was, was the piece at Deurze. And that it was completely flooded there. The power of nature, you saw that there, with all that water, and the course in it with all that movement.”

Eight paintings came out of your hands, what is the most beautiful?

“I think my oil paint on linen, somewhere near the Taarlosche deep at Gasteren. There you see people standing together for a green-white ribbon. Those nature lovers are not allowed to go. I thought that was such a beautiful combination. There was a beaverburcht. And I was with a fellow artist there, I can say about the project. After all, green is good.

The Beek in Beek exhibition in the DSG gallery in Assen can be seen until 13 September. Also at other locations there are exhibitions of the art project of the Drenthe Schildersgenootschap. Take a look at for this this link.
