During the Romanian cycling race, a bear was seen several times by the riders and guidance. Most likely it is the same. “There was a bear in the middle of the road with a group of those left behind. The riders could only continue when the bear was hunted by the organization of the road,” said the 59-year-old team leader.
“In the hotel, notes also hung that you shouldn’t go on the street in the evening, because you could get in touch with a bear. If you see one you should certainly not get out and take a photo. Those bears might look rude, but they are very fast.”
According to ecologist Jeroen Helmer, there is little chance that the brown bear will attack a person. “Of course something can always happen. The brown bear is curious. They investigate everything and they are also used to people in Romania. They are mainly omnivores. If they just wake up after hibernation, they have a little meat needs and they sometimes eat a carcass, but the vast majority of their food consists of berries and fruit. Especially in this time of the year,” says Helmer.
