Carlos Alcaraz reached the quarter-finals at the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon. The Spanish defending champion, who had to hand in several sentences in the first week of the tournament, defeated Andrey Rublev 6: 7 (5: 7), 6: 3, 6: 4 and 6: 4 on Sunday.

Against Rublev, Alcaraz also had to give up a sentence, which was particularly due to the fact that the Spaniard’s opponent played a lot, especially at the beginning. In the tiebreak, the Russian was the more active player, also equipped with the better nerves. The first sentence therefore deservedly went to Rublev.

Alcaraz again with loss of sets

Alcaraz, who had even lost two sentences against Jan-Lennard Struff in the third round and lost two sentences against Fabio Fognini in the first round, was once more confronted with a lost round. As in the previous round, however, this did little with the nerve costume of the defending champion.

Even if Rublev showed two and three more good tennis, the Spaniard was now there immediately at the smallest weak point. In round two, Alcaraz decreased his opponent at 4: 3, in the third set at 3: 3. The 22-year-old did not allow anything to do with his own service.

Now against a local hero

Alcaraz also tackled the fourth set in a highly concentrated manner. Again, a small phase of weakness from Rublev, which he used for the decisive break, was enough for him. At the title defense mission, the Spaniard now meets local hero Cameron Norrie in the quarter -finals.

“I played very intelligently today, it was a tactically good match. Andrey is a very powerful player. I had to make the best of my chances. From the second set, I felt very good. I’m glad I will be a round,” said Alcaraz after the game.
