FC Bayern Munich quickly ticked off a possible obligation by Nico Williams for financial reasons. “We as a sporting management with (sports director) Christoph Freund, of course, have clarified whether a player like Nico Williams is possible,” Bayern sports director Max Eberl told the streaming service DAZN before the quarterfinals of the club World Cup against Paris Saint-Germain in Atlanta.
“But when we heard the salary demands to speak to the player at all, Bayern Munich resigned very quickly and said: ‘Okay, then we don’t,’,” said Eberl. When asked how high the salary claims were, the 51-year-old replied: “This is not an issue today.”
The German record champion is on the offensive in search of reinforcements after Mathys Tel has permanently switched to Tottenham Hotspur and Leroy Sané has joined the Turkish club Galatasaray Istanbul. For a long time, Williams, who was also associated with FC Barcelona, was considered a possible replacement. On Friday, Bilbao announced that he had extended the contract with the European champion by 2035.
The transfer fee stipulated in an exit clause was “increased by more than 50 percent”. According to media reports, an exit clause with a sum of 62 million euros has been recorded so far. In view of the salary claims, the contract extension has no longer affected FC Bayern, Eberl emphasized.
