The Russian invasion in Ukraine is not over yet. It is important that refugees from Ukraine can continue to count on our support. That is why the European Commission proposed on 4 June 2025 to extend the Temporary Protection Directive (RTB) by one year up to and including 4 March 2027. The European Ministers of Justice and the Interior approved the extension proposal on 13 June 2025. Formal assumption of this in the Council of the European Union was provided on July 15, 2025
In addition, the European Commission, on 4 June 2025, presented a proposal for council recommendations for the period after the RTB. The cabinet adheres to a European coordinated approach for the effectiveness of the approach and the prevention of secondary migration flows. That is why the Netherlands likes to discuss the proposal with other EU member states. The Council of the European Union is expected to accept these recommendations this summer (or otherwise just after the summer).
When millions of people from Ukraine fled for the Russian invasion, the Council of the European Union put the RTB into effect on 4 March 2022. With this, refugees from Ukraine in all EU member states have a temporary right to reception, medical care, and education. It also gives the opportunity to work.
