For years, Marc-André Ter Stegen tried in vain to get the place in the goal of the DFB team. There he finally gets confidence, his search for happiness continues.
Marc-André Ter Stegen did it. Under Julian Nagelsmann, there is no question that he is number one in the goal of the German national team after the question had been asked for years whether he shouldn’t be. For ten years, the 33-year-old had kept his goal at FC Barcelona, but he had no chance in the DFB team because there was someone with Manuel Neuer who, despite his many injuries, could not be displaced.
The long time of suffering was finally over a year ago. Neuer ended his career after the European Championship in 2024 and Ter Stegen got the place that he had to earn for so many years. And luck was complete, in Barcelona he celebrated a perfect start with seven wins in a row with Hansi Flick as a new coach – but then fate struck again. Ter Stegen suffered a serious knee injury and failed for many months.
Clarity at Nagelsmann, “Chaos” at Flick
He was immediately able to show how little this affected its performance in the national team. At the end of May, Nagelsmann made it unmistakably clear before the final Four in the Nations League: “Marc will be number one.” At the same time, however, it also became clear: in Barcelona, the number one is no longer number one. Nagelsmann was waiting for him, apparently not flick.
Routinier Wojciech Szszesny had represented him so well that he was allowed to stay in the goal and got a new contract. But Barca apparently has no interest in the duel of the veterans, instead the Catalans snatched a new goalkeeper at the local rival, which SZSZESNY will probably push back on the bench again.
Thanks to an exit clause, Joan Garcia came for 25 million euros and said: “The chaos is now the problem of the coach. And I would like to make my contribution in which I hopefully play.”
Hansi Flick and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen
In the DFB team, Ter Stegen thought of resignation for new ones
However, this chaos should be minimized – by leaving the club. Sports director Deco had recently stated that there were “No contract that says that you definitely have to play“. He also did not intend to conversation while Nagelsmann had requested, “That he gets an info how it goes on”. Apparently it didn’t exist, but the tendency is clear. Finally, Deko also said: “With Joan we had to make a decision for the present and the future.”
If you believe these words, Ter Stegen is neither the present and the future at Barca – and therefore only the past. As in the new times, the goalkeeper is in the national team on the crossroads.
Around a year ago, he admitted that Ter Stegen had considered ending his career in the DFB team because of his eternal number two status: “To be honest, there are always the moments when you say: Boah, that was a blow again.” Now he has to decide which club he sees his future – he is said to have already rejected an offer of the AS Monaco.
The Stegen should be a regular for the 2026 World Cup
There are many stories about this topic. It is said that Ter Stegen does not want to leave Barca at all, but also that the club is considering withdrawing the captain’s office. As so often, the Catalans have problems with their transfer activities, Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao should face them, but for that, sales and savings in the salary list are needed.
In this regard, Barca has the pressure, but for Ter Stegen the situation is very far from a relaxed. It is questionable whether Nagelsmann will continue to rely on him if he does not change and should actually not play. Ter Stegen actually has to do everything for it, after many big tournaments on the DFB bank, he has the great opportunity to play a game at a world or European championship for the first time at the 2026 World Cup. The goalkeeper stands on a new crossroads.
