In her expected last season, the three-time Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce secured her ninth World Cup ticket.
The 38-year-old Jamaican sprinted in third place at the national championships in Kingston under the eyes of athletics legend Usain Bolt over 100 m in 10.91 seconds and thus qualified for the World Championships in Tokyo (13th to 21st September).
“It was a long way,” said Fraser-Pryce after the final: “But it was not about making it into a team, but about celebrating the trip, and I am grateful to everyone.” Tina Clayton, who celebrated her first national title with a personal best of 10.81 seconds, secured the victory, 200 m world champion Shericka Jackson (10.88) finished second.
Her first World Cup medal (silver with the 4×100 m relay) had already won Fraser-Pryce in Osaka in 2007. Ten world championship titles followed, five of them over 100 m.
Kingston also set a exclamation mark in Kingston (23). The silver medalist of the Paris Olympic Games last summer won the men’s final over 100 m with a personal best of 9.75 seconds and thus moved to sixth place in the fastest sprinter of athletics history. Only Justin Gatlin (9.74), Asafa Powell (9.72), Yohan Blake (9.69), Tyson Gay (9.69) and world record holder Bolt (9.58) were faster.
