Laying basalt blocks in a dike is an art form in itself. With a view, seeing exactly which block fits where and then also know which must follow, requires a trained look. “They can really enjoy that,” says Molle. “If something is beautiful and tight on the slope. They can completely lose themselves in that.”

The work is great, therefore this tribute has been created. The exhibition Men of Basalt consists of portraits, but also of images of the quarries in Germany. Marcel Molle: “You are on a dike and you get 15,000 kilos of stone through your hands every day. And then you will not be bothered by your back at the end of the evening. That requires good technology, but also a certain condition. Not everyone has that.”

From today, the Men of Basalt exhibition can be admired in the context of the 100-year anniversary of the Zuiderzee Works in the church in Oosterland. Look here for opening times.
