One of the most fierce fighting in recent Dutch military history took place in June 2007, in Uruzgan, Afghanistan. That then penetrated limited to it. “The newspapers were full of internal quarrels at the VVD, the opening of the Betuwe line and the bad weather that would soon come to an end,” said the Podcast press release Afghan hand . In the valley of Chora, sixty Dutch soldiers were surrounded by hundreds of Taliban fighters. Aafke Romeijn and Bram Iven reconstruct the fight and give an impression of how the Dutch mission in Afghanistan was defeated here in the media. Uruzgan was eventually quickly erased from the collective memory, despite the fact that very critical reports were written about the performance of the Dutch soldiers during the battle. How did that come? Who were responsible for that and why were we actually in Afghanistan? We hear former soldiers, policy makers, journalists and eyewitnesses in a very carefully built story. Accompanied by music that the makers (also musicians) have composed themselves.
