The summer of the odd years most recently belonged to women in Europe – that’s over, FIFA has filled one of the last gaps in the calendar with men’s football: the club World Cup. Germany and Borussia Dortmund may play at the same time.
When the women of women in Basel open on July 2 in Switzerland, the men’s new club World Cup is still in full swing. The undivided attention that the women’s tournaments last had in the summer of the odd years is gone. There are direct overlaps in seven games in the group phase alone.
“As much as we try to achieve full exclusivity for our women’s tournaments, it is no longer so easy to achieve this privilege in so many male tournaments in so many men’s tournaments”said Nadine Kessler, UEFA women’s football boss, at a media appointment in December. She makes itself “Don’t worry”added Kessler. “We are talking about two tournaments in two different countries and different time zones.”

Germany and BVB may be on TV at the same time
But the fact that the new tournament takes a little spotlight seems inevitable with the now colliding game plans:
- On July 4th Germany plays its first group game against Poland, while a quarter-finals of the club World Cup takes place. In this quarter -finals, Borussia Dortmund could play when the team becomes second in group and prevails in the round of 16. Possible opponents include Manchester City or Real Madrid.
- On July 5th The games against the Netherlands and France against England are in direct competition for the quarter-finals of the club World Cup.
- On July 8th and 9th The games against Sweden and France against Wales take place at the same time as the semi-finals of the club World Cup.
- And on July 13th is the last matchday of Group D with Netherlands – France and England – Wales in competition for the final of the club World Cup.
In addition, the club World Cup can also take room between the games when it comes to topics that discuss football fans.
UEFA organizes the European Championship, but did nothing against the club World Cup
The women’s European Championship is organized by UEFA. The FIFA’s international game calendar, which regulates the games, was determined by the FIFA Council in 2023. Compared to the BBC, FIFA pointed out that UEFA representatives are also a member there. This includes DFB President Bernd Neuendorf. This model was “regarded as the most balanced solution,” said FIFA.
In 2019, the UEFA had still made a strong contradiction when there were first plans for an enlarged menu of the men. In the end, however, there were no more contradictions, since the top clubs in Europe benefit financially from the new World Cup. The UEFA cannot oppose these interests because it needs the top clubs in Europe in the fight against the impending Super League on its side. “The club World Cup now takes place and ready. The clubs from Europe wanted the tournament”said Uefa President Aleksander Ceferin in April.

In 2029 the next European Championships is pending. Even then, the club World Cup, which is to take place every four years after current planning, could be a competition. The DFB also applied for the European Championships of the Women 2029. Poland, Portugal, Italy and Denmark and Sweden have also announced interest.

Also the men’s gold cup in the shadow of the club World Cup
Not only women’s European Championship tournament has to live with the new competition. At the moment and also in the United States, the men’s gold cup, which is comparable to the European Championship in North America, takes place at the same time and also in the USA. The organizers have to deal empty -handed in some games.
