Due to a suicide attack on a Greek Orthodox Church in Damascus, the capital of Syria, at least twenty people died and 52 people were injured. Various press agencies report this based on the Syrian Ministry of Health and Safety Sources.
According to the Syrian Ministry of the Interior, the perpetrator was a member of IS, writes Reuters news agency. The man walked into the church, opened the fire, and then let his bomb vest explode. At the time of the explosion, a funeral service was going on.
Reporters of AFP describe a destroyed church, destroyed church furniture and pee blood on the ground. This is the first suicide attack since the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime.

Syrian government condemns attack
“We condemn the terrorist suicide attack on the Greek Orthodox Mar Elias church in Damscus,” says the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs an explanation. “We demand that the Syrian transitional authorities take immediate action to call to those involved and take measures to guarantee the security of Christian communities and all religious groups so that they can live without fear.”
The Syrian Minister of Information, Hamza Al-Mustafa, condemns in A message on X The “cowardly act that is at odds with the social values that unite us.” He continues: “We will not abandon our dedication to equal citizenship … and also confirm the State’s promise to make all efforts to combat criminal organization and to guarantee the protection of society against attacks that threaten its safety.”
