Indoor World Cup: triple jumper Rojas wins with a world record, title fights in Belgrade – athletics

The 26-year-old from Venezuela jumped 15.74 meters in Belgrade. She surpassed her previous indoor record, which she had jumped in Madrid on February 21, 2020, by 31 centimeters and even surpassed her outdoor world record. Rojas set the record of 15.67 meters last August at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Silver behind the outstanding triple jumper of recent years was taken by the Ukrainian Maryna Bech-Romantschuk, who improved her jump to 14.74 meters in the last attempt, but jumped exactly one meter shorter than the outstanding Rojas. Bech-Romanchuk, who is also a world leader in the long jump, wrapped herself in a Ukrainian flag indoors and had tears in her eyes.

Neele Eckhardt-Noack in twelfth place

Her teammate Yaroslava Mahuchich had won the high jump title the day before. There is only a six-man team from Ukraine in Belgrade given the Russian attack.

While Neele Eckhardt-Noack from Göttingen came in twelfth in the triple jump with 13.96 meters, the German 3000-meter champion Maximilian Thorwirth took eighth place. The man from Düsseldorf ran 7:45.87 minutes and kept himself respectable for a long time. 10,000m Olympic champion Selemon Barega secured the title in 7:41.38 minutes ahead of his Ethiopian compatriot Lamecha Girma, who ran 7:41.63 minutes. Brit Marc Scott took bronze in 7:42.02 minutes.

Holloway sets world hurdle record

American Grant Holloway set his own world record for the 60m hurdles. The 24-year-old won the second of three semifinals on Sunday in 7.29 seconds. Holloway, who had won Olympic silver and World Championship gold in the 110 m hurdles, ran the same time in February 2021 in Madrid. Gregor Traber (Tübingen), who started in the same semi-final as Holloway, retired in 7.67 seconds.
