Washington (dpa-AfX)-leading democrats have sharply criticized the decision of US President Donald Trump to attack goals in Iran, and also questioned the legality of military operation. No president should have the right to lead this country on his own and without a clear strategy, the democratic minority leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer said. The Republican Trump must answer the congress and the people of America. “The risk of a larger, longer and more devastating war has now increased dramatically,” said Schumer.
Just like Schumer, the minority leader in the House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries, called for an immediate informing of the congress by the government. “President Trump deceived the country with regard to his intentions, failed to obtain an authorization of the congress for military operation and takes the risk of American entanglement into a potentially disastrous war in the Middle East,” said Jeffries. The risk that the United States would be involved in a war had “increased dramatically”.
Schumer also advocated bringing a law to the Senate that would limit the president’s right to order military operations abroad without the consent of the congress. In view of the majority of Republicans in the chamber, the project has no realistic chances of success.
The former chairman of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, accused Trump of unlawful. With the order of military operation without the consent of the parliament, Trump “ignored the constitution,” said the MP.
Of his republicans, who currently have the majority in both congress chambers, Trump received plenty of praise and approval for the attacks on the Iranian nuclear facilities./JBZ/DP/ZB
