The University of Amsterdam (UvA) will not enter into new collaborations with Israeli organizations within a European research initiative for the time being. The Executive Board (CVB) announces Friday First to await the results of an EU investigation into compliance with the association agreement with Israel. This concerns collaborations within Horizoneurope, the most important EU financing program for research and innovation

The UvA speaks of an ‘extra step’, but does not break all ties with Israeli universities. For example, on exchanges with Tel Aviv University, an advisory committee is now considering ‘accelerated’, the Executive Board writes. Individual collaborations between scientists can continue.

New guidelines

For a year and a half, especially at the UvA, there has been a lot of demonstration against cooperation with Israeli institutions and universities. Demonstrants demand that all ties are cut with Israeli universities, due to their alleged facilitating role in the oppression of Palestinians. The UvA does not go that far.

The university does come ‘in very short term’ with new guidelines for collaborations with third parties. The university emphasizes that collaborations „case-by-case“Being judged. The university was already suspended an exchange program with Hebrew University.

The Executive Board writes to be concerned “about the persistent and large -scale violence against the Palestinian population.” It will organize meetings for students and employees ‘within the foreseeable future’, to keep talking about the subject.

TU Eindhoven, Radboud University in Nijmegen, Tilburg University and Erasmus University Rotterdam, among others, were already taking similar measures.
