Old story: Sometimes the moon sets the rhythm. For example, when it comes to when it is best to plant tomatoes, cut hair or a child. At least that says the legend that is not only spread in the Appalachen and to which the title of this album refers. SG Goodman from Kentucky has always looked at the world’s noise from a certain distance.
With Planting by the Signs, she continues and becomes someone who tells across the fence, which has been going on in the past few months, not all of it is lucky, it quickly becomes clear. At the same time, a kind of stubborn hope runs through these songs. Goodman reconciled with an alienated bandmate, started writing again and found the way back to the studio.
From life in death and maybe beyond
The result is a very immediate collection of small, sometimes reduced, instrumented and sometimes home -friendly songs. These are less reminiscent of the numerous roots repeaters: inside these days than on traditional sizes like Lucinda Williams or Gillian Welch. They have one thing in common: they all let themselves in the world, never look for the big melody.
Songs such as the wonderful “Nature’s Child” or the final “Heavens Song” show that it will come by itself. He continues to swell in the course of his nine minutes, actually it is about the dying of the beloved dog, but also about an old Chevrolet Malibu. This in turn seems to be a symbol for something bigger that reliably chauffeures us all reliably – if not without turbulence – from life in death and maybe beyond. Touching.
