According to Herzog, the 7-year-old Nastya Borik was killed with four other family members. Her mother Mariia (30), Grandma Lena (60) and Neven Ilya (13) and Konstantin (9) also died. The Ukrainian authorities previously reported that five Ukrainian citizens died in the attack, without more details.
Herzog writes that the family came to Israel in December 2022 for the treatment of Nastya. “Although it initially turned out to be successful, the disease came back afterwards and a bone marrow transplant could not stop aggressive leukemia,” said the Israeli president. “She came here to live, but was killed instead,” he added.
Mariia Pieshkurova, Nastya’s mother, regularly shared updates about the treatment of her daughter via Instagram. She said that Nastya was diagnosed for the first time in August 2022. “Since that day, our main goal is to save her. To breathe and not to give up,” she wrote in a message in April.

Her latest update dates from May 27. She wrote: “I will do everything to save my daughter. Nobody else will fight like me because Nastya is my life. She is everything I have. And as long as I breathe, I scream, I believe, I believe, I fight.” Nastya’s father, Artem Borik, currently serves in the Ukrainian army and fighting Russia at the front, says Herzog.
