After the Klopp insult: Association complains of referees
June 17, 2025 – 8:41 p.m.Reading time: 1 min.
The referee had already been suspended last year because of the insults against Jürgen Klopp. Now the FA continues to go through.
The English referee David Cote has to face a procedure of the English Football Association FA for insulting statements about Jürgen Klopp and FC Liverpool. The 42-year-old was suspended in December after an older video appeared on social media.
The material from 2020 shows Coote how he comments in vulgar and degrading ways about Klopp and the coach’s club at the time. He also described Klopp as “liar” and “damn arrogant”. The video also contains further derogatory comments – one of them in relation to Klopp’s nationality. The FA now classifies these statements as a “serious violation” against its rules.
The referee association of the Premier League (PGMOL) immediately released Coote from his tasks after the video was published. The suspension continues to apply.
Other allegations raised against COOTE, however, remain without disciplinary consequences. The FA announced that they were completely examined. Among other things, Coote was mentioned in connection with prohibited gambling. There is also a video that shows him when using a white powder. The recordings are said to have been taken during the European Championships in 2024.
At the beginning of the year, UEFA had already blocked the referee for international missions until June 2026. In January, he came out in an interview as a homosexual and said his struggle to hide his sexuality, had contributed to bad decisions. He was “really sorry” for his deeds.
