Relegation: Braunschweig saved against Saarbrücken (9 min)
Status: 06/17/2025 7:39 p.m.
Eintracht Braunschweig has signed Heiner Backhaus as a new coach. The 43-year-old changes from Alemannia Aachen to Lower Saxony’s second division.
At BTSV, Backhaus inherited Daniel Schering, from which Eintracht had separated after the end of the second division season. In the relegation against third division third 1. FC Saarbrücken, club icon Marc Pfitzner looked after the “lions” and led to relegation.
Nevertheless, the club managers around managing director Benjamin Kessel decided to sign a new coach. Backhaus signed a contract dated June 30, 2027.
“I burn for this task and will be full of energy from the first dayn.
Heiner Backhaus
“Being the head coach of the Braunschweig Löwen fulfills me with great pride. Eintracht is an emotional traditional club with a lot of energy and passion,” said Backhaus. “I am particularly looking forward to working with an exciting team and the passionate fans. Together we want to spark a fire, feel the joy of the privilege of professional football, grow as a team and invest everything to be successful. I can hardly wait for it to finally start.
“Exactly the right trainer for our way.”
Managing Director Benjamin Kessel
Backhaus stands for a “clear football orientation, with a positive and self -confident attitude as well as high intensity and a lot of passion,” said Benjamin Kessel, Managing Director Sport at Eintracht Braunschweig. “The position of the head coach is a key role – so it was important to us despite the time pressure to lead the selection process conscientiously and with great care. Heiner Backhaus is just the right trainer for our way – with it we will go to the next step towards stabilization and further development.”
Via Berlin and Aachen to Braunschweig
For the 43-year-old, the BTSV is the seventh coaching station. The football teacher from Witten had taken his first steps as a coach in 2014 with Inter Leipzig. Five years later, he moved to the Lower Saxony Club BSV Rehden, which at the time still played in the regional league. This was followed by engagements at SG Sonnenhof Großaspach, Rot-Weiß Koblenz and the BFC Dynamo before Backhaus hired in Aachen in early September 2023.
The coach led the traditional club to the third division and thereby managed to stay in the league with the Alemannia in the past series. Now Backhaus is supposed to lead the Eintracht to the quiet fairway after years of the grueling relegation battle.
As a player a “hiking bird”
The new man on the sidelines brings a lot of experience to Hamburger Strasse. He met the (football) world in particular as a player. He could confidently be referred to as a “hiking bird”. In addition to various stations in Germany – including Hannover 96 – Backhaus was also active in Saudi Arabia, Malta, Cyprus and Hong Kong.
In 2014, the former junior international trained at Werder Bremen ended his active career after a commitment to the Amateur Club SV Blau-Weiß Farnstädt.
Pfitzner remains assistant coach
Marc Pfitzner, “Löwen” co-trainer since July 2021, will remain part of the coaching staff in this function. In the relegation games against 1. FC Saarbrücken, the 40-year-old took responsibility as an interim coach and successfully led the team to relegation.
Pfitzner and Backhaus completed the course for the DFB Pro license together and already got to know each other during this time.
