The perfect match? An interior stylist and a man with two right hands! Mike (30) and Annebeth (27) competed with a dated 1950s house in the old village. And the end result is to get through a ring.

Hard
A Funda advertisement that will either itch your hands, or stand your neck hair right. At Annebeth the first happened, with Mike the last. Annebeth explains: “I look at a space and know exactly how I want to change it and what’s nice.” And that talent came in handy. After the viewing, the interior stylist made 3D visualizations of the home, and managed to convince Mike. He explains: “I thought, we really have to work.”

‘It was really bad’
The couple made an offer and three weeks later they received good news. “We were really lucky,” says Mike. “Many people did not dare. Everything had to be tackled.” The house from 1957 had not been touched since the delivery. Think of: multiple layers of wallpaper, scraps, single glass, a geyser, gas heater, leaking sewerage and no heating on the first floor. “It was really bad,” says Annebeth.
But that was not everything. “During the demolition we came across old beehives everywhere, and holes in the roof through the birds,” continues Mike. “I really thought, what kind of monster came through,” says Annebeth jokingly.
Almost nothing has remained.

A good team

The renovation lasted a total of a year and two months. Annebeth made all the measures and designed the kitchen, bathroom and the electricity plan. But she and Mike also stuck their sleeves in the execution. And with the help of family and friends, they brought their plans to life. “A good friend of ours is a carpenter and contractor. Without him the renovation would have lasted much longer,” says Annebeth.

Japandi with its own twist
The house exchanged his 1950s looks for a quiet Japandi style, with own twist. “We would not do anything else,” says Annebeth. “Or well … maybe a bath.” Laughing, Mike adds: “I take a bath with my parents occasionally.”
Some original elements have been preserved in the house, such as the front door and wooden beams in the attic. “Almost nothing has remained,” says Annebeth. “You could look through our bedroom window from the street to the attic.” Mike adds: “This allowed us to rebuild everything, with new electricity, sewerage and underfloor heating.”
Forever in the old village
The first two weeks it still felt like a vacation, but now they feel completely at home on the Irenelaan. “We are real village people now,” says Mike. “Every evening we walk around the village and Molenstraat.”
As icing on the cake, all their friends live within walking distance. Mike says: “Itbeth was her goal that all our friends could see the mill from their own house. And we succeeded.” They will not see themselves moving for the next ten years. “But if we moved, we would choose a house in the old village again. I already have a few in mind,” says Annebeth with a smile.
