Lando Norris made the moment of the race in Canada when he drove his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piatri into the rear. Due to the crash, the Brit lost important points in the Formula 1 title fight. Therefore, RTL expert Günther Steiner is now calling for a stable order. McLaren should set Piatri in the World Cup fight due to the high error rate of Norris.
After the first shock about the team internal McLaren-Crash had overcome at the Canada-GP, there were many questioning faces in the Formula 1 driver warehouse and among fans: Which non-existent gap had Lando Norris seen in his accident with team-mate Oscar Piatri?
The Brit was quickly insightful, took the full guilt on the radio. While the crash cost him important points in the World Cup fight, one could speak of luck from McLaren’s perspective that Piatri lost no positions due to the incident.
It is by no means the first mistake of Norris in the current season, but it is the hardest to date. RTL expert and ex-Haas team boss Günther Steiner sees only a clear conclusion from the Norris misery: stable order.
“You don’t have to, but you should,” said Steiner. “I would do it. Especially after the mistakes that Lando does. You don’t want to risk anything. This maneuver was completely unnecessary and risked the second car.”
Formula 1: “This is Lando Norris”
The Italian became clear in his criticism: “This is Lando Norris. He always makes mistakes that have great consequences. That is why Piatri is in the lead in the World Cup, he makes fewer mistakes.”
Norris himself recognized his excessive error rate after the crash, but does not hope for a stable order: “No, I don’t think so. I hope that I can learn from my mistakes.”
He received support in this assessment from his teammate. “I don’t think we need it. We both try to get the World Cup. We just want both the opportunity and so it stays fair,” said the Australian.
After the Canada GP, Norris is now 22 points behind Piatri-that’s almost a Grand Prix victory (25 points). However, there are still more than half of the season to go. So nothing has been decided yet.
