Alexander Zverev misses the victory in Stuttgart. In the final he fights back after a weak start, but in the end he has the slightly weaker nerves.
For the time being, the longed -for title on lawn is missing for Alexander Zverev. At the ATP tournament in Stuttgart, the world number in the final was defeated by the American Taylor Fritz in two sets with 3: 6, 6: 7 (0: 7).
For Zverev it was the first appearance after the French Open out against Novak Djoković. The 28-year-old competed in Stuttgart to prepare for Wimbledon eleven days after the quarter-final defeat in Paris-however, he was denied the tournament victory.
Since Michael Stich’s title win in 1991, no German player has won the tournament at the Weissenhof.
The organizers had preferred the final due to the bad weather forecast on noon. Nevertheless, the game was interrupted by a rain break at 1: 1 in the second set – for around 80 minutes.
But even after the interruption, Zverev was little able to counter the powerful game of Fritz. The American was clearly superior, especially in the tie-break of the second set-Zverev remained without a point.
This continues Zverev’s negative series against Fritz. For the fifth time in a row, he had to give up his opponent. Fritz will be fourth in the world rankings in Stuttgart from Monday.
For Zverev, the preparation for Wimbledon, which takes place from June 30th to July 13th, will continue at the tournament in Halle next week.
