Before the draw, the 64 teams were divided into two solder pots. The Bundesliga clubs and the 14 best teams from the 2nd Bundesliga are located in the professional pot.
The remaining four teams from the lower house, like the four best clubs from the 3. League, are automatically qualified for the DFB Cup. But they come to the amateur pot, where the 24 state cup winners can also be found.
In the course of the draw, an opponent from the first lottery is pulled for each amateur association. The teams from pot two always have home rights.

This year, the first round in the DFB Cup is only heralding the new season for the Bundesliga clubs. The cup games that take place from August 15th to August are the first competitive games for BVB, Eintracht Frankfurt and Co. before the Bundesliga starts a week later.
The teams from the 2nd Bundesliga, on the other hand, start again on August 1st and are a little more in the game rhythm for the first round.
FC Bayern as the reigning champion and cup winner VfB Stuttgart are a special case. Since the two clubs play the game for the Franz Beckenbauer supercup on August 16, their cup games are postponed. These will be made up for on August 26 and 27.
