Germany wants to organize the European Football Championship of women. The capital will not be there. DFB President Neuendorf comments.
If the women’s European Championships 2029 take place in Germany, a prominent place would go away empty-handed: Berlin. The capital is not one of the eight cities with which the German Football Association (DFB) wants to apply for the tournament.
As the association announced, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hanover, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich and Wolfsburg are to be taken into account as venues in the application process. The DFB Presidium thus followed a recommendation of a specially used expert body.
In addition to Berlin, Gelsenkirchen and Rostock were not taken into account. In an earlier step, Hamburg, Bremen and Essen had already left the application process.
DFB President Bernd Neuendorf expressed himself optimistically: the decision gave the association “tailwind and confidence for the international application process”. With a view to the eight selected cities, he emphasized: “We are ready to host another big football festival in Germany in 2029.”
Germany was hosting the European women’s Championship in 1989 and 2001. There are other applications for 2029 – including from Denmark and Sweden that go into the race together. Poland, Portugal and Italy also expressed their interest.
When awarding the 2027 World Cup, Germany failed in a joint application with Belgium and the Netherlands. The contract went to Brazil. The decision on the venue of the EM 2029 is scheduled to make in December.
