Mel Brooks will celebrate the 40th anniversary of “Spaceballs” with … another “spaceballs”. The filmmaker announced on Thursday that a sequel to 2027 was in the works. “After 40 years we asked: ‘What do the fans want?’,” He said in a video clip. “But instead we make this film.”
A tribute in the form of a Star Wars parodie trailer
The teaser runs off in the style of the well-known Star Wars “Space Scroll” intree and summarizes all sequels and series that have appeared on the franchise in the eighties since Brooks’ parody. “38 years ago there was only a Star Wars trilogy,” it says. “But since then there has been … a prequel trilogy, a sequel trilogy, a sequel of the prequel, a prequel of the sequel, countless TV spinoffs, a film spinoff from the TV spinoff that is both prequel and sequel.”
And in addition to two “Dune” films, seven “Jurassic Park” films, five “Avatar” films and much more. (A sequel that is curious in the text is Brooks’ own “History of the World, Part II”.)
The text ends with: “But in 38 years there was only one … Spaceballs.”
Brooks wears “Spaceballs: The Sweatshirt”
In addition to Brooks’ appearance (he wears a “Spaceballs: The Sweatshirt”) at the end of the clip, in which he announces the sequel, the teaser reveals only one thing: the film will only be seen in the cinema. This leaves a lot of space for speculation about how strong Brooks – which will be 100 years old in 2027 – will actually be involved.
Josh Gad, who worked on the film with Brooks, was enthusiastic about the project on Instagram. “I was this child who saw spaceball before I ever saw Star Wars, and then asked me why someone would do a dramatic remake of the MEL Brooks classic,” he wrote. “It is therefore the greatest gift of my life to work with Mel and this incredible group to continue the film that George Lucas inspired in the first place.”
Director confirmed, but still open
According to the “Guardian”, Josh Greenbaum, director of “Strays” and “Barb and Star Go to Vista del Mar”, will direct. However, the line -up has not yet been confirmed. John Candy, who played Barf, and Joan Rivers, who lent her voice to the C-3Po-like Dot Matrix, died-but the main actors such as Brooks themselves, Bill Pullman and Daphne Zuniga still live.
Rick Moranis, who was seen as Dark Helmet, is still alive, even though he retired from acting in 1997. Although he canceled a cameo appearance in the “Ghostbusters” reboot in 2016, but in 2020 agreed to appear in “Shrunk”-a reboot of “Darling, I have shrunk”, which was not yet realized.
Since then, Moranis has mainly been active as a voice actor, published comedy albums and occasionally appeared as half of the cult duo Bob and Doug McKenzie (with Dave Thomas). He also spoke Lord Dark Helmet in a episode of the “The Goldbergs” series.
So far, it is unclear whether Moranis will play in “Spaceballs 2”, and rumors are already circulating. In any case, the following applies: May the Schwartz be with him – and everyone involved.
