National coach Christian Wück appointed Cora Zicai in the squad of the German national soccer team for the European Championship. He leaves Felicitas Rauch and Nicole Anyomi at home.
The 52-year-old announced his 23-member squad for the tournament from July 2 to 27 in Switzerland on Thursday (June 12, 2025). Captain Giulia Gwinn and striker Lea Schüller from Doublegewinner FC Bayern, as well as goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger and Sara Däbritz are among the leaders.
At 34, Berger from the US Club NY/NJ Gotham has already played 108 international matches in the number of eight-time European champions, Olympique Lyon Olympique Lyon.
Eleven players from the squad of the EM 2022
A total of eleven players were nominated who reached the European Championship final in England three years ago. “We want to act with a mixture of joy, enthusiasm, will and conviction – this is what this squad stands for. If we succeed, we can go very far for us,” said Wück.
He believes “that we are seen by the English, Spaniards, French women as a favorite – and that’s exactly how we want to go into the games,” said Wück at the press conference. “If we call up our performance 100 percent, everything is possible.”
DFB sports director Nia Künzer is convinced that “we will play a successful European Championship with this squad”. The 2003 world champion recalled how she started in tournaments as a player – “with the target picture title”.
Zicai, Alara only on call
Wück had dissolved the biggest question mark on the contingent last week: Bayern star Lena Oberdorf, since her cruciate ligament rupture almost a year ago without any game practice, does not go to the European Championship.
Martina Knief, Sportschau, 12.06.2025 3:17 p.m.
As expected, defenders Rauch (North Carolina Courage/USA) and Frankfurt striker Anyomi are not there as expected. The two had recently criticized the communication of the national coach and thus caused a lot of vertebrae and a pronunciation in the national team.
This is what the 20 -year -old striker and future Wolfsburg native Zicai (SC Freiburg) stands in the squad, who most recently lacked muscle complaints. Talent Alara Sehitler, however, has to wait for the European Championship premiere, the 18-year-old from FC Bayern is only listed on call for the time being-as well as smoke.
Germany starts against Poland in the European Championship
The German footballers go to the European Championship as third in the world. With 2030.88 points, the selection of national coach Wück in the current FIFA ranking is further behind the leading Olympic champion USA (2057.19) and world champion Spain (2034.34).
Behind Spain and the European champions from England, Germany, together with France, the Netherlands and Sweden, belongs to the extended circle of favorites. The DFB women will start the tournament on July 4 (9 p.m.) in St. Gallen against Poland. Other group opponents are Denmark (July 8th in Basel) and Sweden (July 12th in Zurich).
To prepare for the tournament, the team will meet for the training camp in Herzogenaurach on June 19.
