Hollandse Nieuwe Nieuwe will be imprisoned in about six weeks. That happens in northern waters, west of Norway and Denmark. A delicate process of catching, jaws, salts, mature and freezing is currently taking place in Scandinavia. Then the first full-fat Omega 3-bombs come to the Netherlands.
Scheveningen fishermen afraid that they will not be able to sail through NATO summit at the start of herring season: ‘supply fresh fish in danger’
First Hollandse Nieuwe Available from June 18
“This year no Sinterklaas journal, asking whether he will be on time in the Netherlands, or not,” says Guido van der Maaden. The herring specialist is responsible for purchasing for fish processor Cornelis Vrolijk from IJmuiden and is lyrical about the first catches, he says to De Telegraaf.
“In earlier years it was sometimes the question of whether the herring would be fat enough for a Dutch new (fat percentage of at least 16 percent, ed.) Around this time. But this year there is no doubt about it: the sea is full of food and the pegs are of exceptional quality,” says the herring specialist who assesses the catch and processing from the Norwegian Kalvåg. “We now even have fat percentages above 20 percent! That is exceptionally good, compared to previous years.”
After dramatic years, investments are made again in fishing
Auction first keg on June 17 in Scheveningen
This year’s auction of the first barrel of Haring is planned on Tuesday 17 June in the Visafslag van Scheveningen. A day later, the buddies (with or without onions and sour) are available from the fish traders throughout the country.
“I don’t turn around: given the quality that we now see here in Scandinavia, it will be a wonderful herring year,” concludes Van der Maaden. “The processing is running plenty and slowly the first trucks with buckets herring are now going to the Netherlands.”
