The joints and stones of the iron tower were damaged by rain, wind and freezing cold. For 22 months the 84 meter high monument was in the scaffolding. The roof of the ground floor has also been renewed. The restoration costs more than 2 million euros, half has been paid for by Flanders. The Museum aan de IJzer in the tower remained open during the renovation.
