2020 Miss Finland Viivi Altonen tells Aki Linnanahde Talk Show -In podcast about her mother’s serious alcohol problem. Mom became frozen when Altonen was five years old.
Altonen does not have very clear memories of the time when the mother suffered from alcoholism. Above all, the mother’s alcohol problem has appeared to Altonen so that it has been difficult to read situations.
One memory Altonen highlights the podcast.
– We have been a little scared with my sister under the table. Mom has been trying to get us well in the way that everything is well, Altonen recalls.
Altonen’s mother was 21 years old when she gave birth to Viivi. The mother in the restaurant industry was at work and she was asleep.
With the sober, the mother changed the industry. Also in the new job, the mother was at work at work, but according to Altonen, the “atmosphere changed”.
– I haven’t thought my parents had traumatized me. But it has shaped me as a person and personality if there has been an insecure childhood, says Altonen.

Kati says that the development of addiction started before motherhood. Initially, alcohol consumption focused on parties and bars. However, the addiction evolved to the fact that Kati drank at home as well.
– I explained to myself that there was no problem when I’m not terribly drunk or there were no drinking groups. It was typical of women’s scenes, Kati says.
At home, Kati’s addiction appeared in the atmosphere.
– Yes, I was hilarious and lively in the rise. By the end of the evening I was absent. I think in the mornings I was pretty tight, Kati recalls.
Towards the end, Kati’s drinking was almost daily. Kati drank nine to ten mild bottles a day. For example, he maintained the scenes by putting the kids in clean clothes. For example, the home had to be neat.
– There is a contradiction that you wouldn’t want to drink, but the fear of revelation is terrible, says Kati.
The carrots eventually drove Kati to sober. Viivi tells the podcast what she and her mother have now.
– The relationship has started to develop for the better. The more this time, the closer we have become, says Altonen.
Altonen was crowned Miss Finland in 2020. During his victory, Altonen revealed that he would have participated in the competition earlier in 2016, but left the race at the age of 18 due to a drunk driving sentence.
– I felt that I was not a good role model for people when there was so little time for that judgment. I really wanted to be able to come here on the stage and say I learned about my actions. So I did and it was the right decision. I believe everyone deserves another chance. I got the big ones from my mother that I still got involved, Altonen told Iltalehti.
