Twelve large boulders from Hoorn, who were symbolically brought to Drenthe last month, were unveiled at the Hunebedcentrum in Borger. They tell the story of the stones in Drenthe that protected the Northern Dutch for centuries against the seawater. Today was the official unveiling of the boulders, but the initiators of the return of the stones were not invited for this.

“We liked it so much that it was possible to do something special with it,” Chris de Meij, councilor in Hoorn, looks back. There were thousands of boulders on the city beach, which had partly become superfluous. A large part of it came from Drenthe. Together with Arnold Wegner, councilor for PvdA Hoorn, he committed himself to “restore” the stones last year.

They came up with different ideas, such as a horns dolmen and a lapidarium (a stenent garden, ed.). When they did not get their hands on each other in the Hoorn city council, they suggested giving the stones back to Drenthe.

They had ears that at the hunebed center. In collaboration with the municipality of Hoorn, twelve boulders were chosen from the Westfriese Omringdijk, of which it could be established by experts that they were originally from Drenthe. They had a special place in the museum’s Oertijdpark.
