Greenland’s national soccer team played a friendly in Germany-against a selection of the Danish minority in Schleswig-Holstein. The encounter in Flensburg ended with a 4: 3 success, but has long since not only had a sporting meaning.
The Greenland, which is hitherto on the North American continent, lies geographically, but rather politically belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark, as well as the Faroe Islands.
Greenland hopes for association admission
Official international matches cannot yet play the Greenlanders because they are not a member of an international football association.
The Greenland Football Association Kalaallit Arsaattartut Kattuffiat (KAK) hopes that something will change: he works to become 42nd member of the North and Central America’s continental association and the Caribbean (Concacaf). KAK submitted a corresponding application for admission in May 2024.
Until a decision has been made, the team of Denmark, who comes from Denmark, must look for a game practice in another way. The team traveled to Skaerbaek in the German-Danish border area for a week. Already on Tuesday there was a 1-1 win over the reserve team of the Danish cup finalist Silkeborg IF. According to the association, a game against the German national league team TSV Kropp is still pending.
International character without being an official international match
A joint acquaintance in Silkeborg had conveyed contact with the Danish minority in Germany. “What is special about the game is that it has an international character, although this is not an official international match,” said the team manager of the selection of Sydslesvig, Kaj Andersen.
His team consists of players from Flensburg, Schleswig and the surrounding area. Most of them play in the Landesliga or Verbandsliga.
