On Thursday evening, June 5th, Depeche Mode celebrated the world premiere of her new concert film “M” at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. The film, staged by the award-winning director Fernando Frias (“I’m No Longer here” 2019), documents three appearances by the band during their Memento Mori tour in Mexico City.
The focus is not only on live performance, but also the special connection between the band and its Mexican fans. The director tried to capture the passionate veneration of the spectators and at the same time to make a cultural bridge for Mexican fascination with death – a central theme of the album Memento Mori.
The approximately 95 -minute film will be shown in selected cinemas worldwide from autumn 2025. At the premiere in New York, Dave Gahan and Martin Gore were personally present – accompanied by their wives – and took part in the panel discussion with director Frias after the panel discussion.
Surprise in the credits: unpublished song “in the End”
A highlight for fans: In the credits of the film, a previously unknown song could be heard, the title of which is, according to unofficial information, “in the End”. This track apparently comes from the admission sessions to Memento Mori, but has not yet been published. When asked about further unpublished songs, Martin Gore reacted with humor: “I have no idea what to do with the other three songs.”
Why Mexico?
Martin Gore dealt with the decision to make the film in Mexico: the band has already recorded many live films in Europe and some in the USA. “It is really important and great that we have finally done one in Mexico. The country has grown very dear to us over the years,” he said.
Kerrilee Gore, Martin’s wife, also enthusiastically commented on the film. On Instagram she praised: “Wonderful work by Fernando Frias. This film is poetic. So many layers and textures that capture live energy with the meaning behind the scenes.”
