Last weekend the South African participated in the Ironman 70.3 in Durban, half a triathlon competition consisting of swimming, cycling and running. His participation, more than a year after his conditional release, raises questions about the conditions of his reintegration in society.

According to the organizers of the Ironman 70.3, he finished 555th in the general rankings and as third in the ‘physically limited’ category. Pistorius took 5 hours, 56 minutes and 39 seconds.

Pistorius, nicknamed the “Blade Runner” because of his characteristic prostheses of carbon fiber, became world famous as a groundbreaking athlete that broke the line between valid and disabled athletes. He won six gold medals on three Paralympic Games and in 2012 was the first double amputated athlete to participate in the Olympic Games.

His reputation got a fatal blow when he shot his then girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp through a closed bathroom door on Valentine’s Day 2013. He claimed to have thought her for an intruder, but was eventually convicted of murder. After more than ten years of legal proceedings, prison sentence and professional cases, Pistorius was conditionally released in January 2024. His punishment runs until 2029. That Pistorius can now participate in a triathlon, therefore, many people will come across the chest.
