The resolution states that “an unconditional and permanent ceasefire” must come immediately. Unhindered humanitarian assistance must also take place according to the text.

The US, an ally of Israel, is one of the five countries in the council that can stop proposals with a veto. Acting ambassador Dorothy Shea said that approval of the resolution would undermine the current negotiations on a file.

“The United States has made it clear that we do not support any measure that does not condemn Hamas and does not call for disarmament from Hamas and their departure from Gaza,” said the American diplomat prior to the vote.
