The protesters have renamed the Roeterseilandcampus since Monday afternoon to the ‘Alaa al-Najar Campus’, named after the Palestinian pediatrician who lost her husband and nine children to an Israeli bombing. They have indicated that they do not throw away barricades, “because we want this to be an open space,” said a demonstrator to AT5.
According to demonstrators, the aim is no different than in the past year and a half: break both economic and university ties with Israel and do not start new ties.
Rector and deputy chairman of the Executive Board Peter-Paul Verbeek entered into conversation with a few of the demonstrators on Monday afternoon. “We want to continue the conversation tomorrow,” said a spokesperson on behalf of the UvA. “We want to prevent escalation.”
No measures
At the end of Monday afternoon, the UvA advised the Pro-Palestina protesters to break down the tents before 10 p.m. because of its own safety. That advice remains in the evening, although the university will not take any further action, provided it remains calm.
