Johnny Heinga is no longer an assistant coach of Arne Slot at Liverpool FC. The Dutch takes over the position of head coach at Ajax Amsterdam for the new season, where he receives a contract until 2027. As a co-trainer, 41-year-old Marcel Keizer is available. Heinga and Ajax thus come together again after the ex-defender was on the sidelines in the first half of 2023, but despite a good point cut of 2.05, however, did not receive a new contract. Before working at the LFC, Heinga also worked as an assistant coach at West Ham.
In the Dutch record champion, he follows the Italian Francesco Farioli, who left the club at his own request. “Management and I have the same goals for the future of Ajax, but we have different visions and time frames how we should work to achieve these goals,” the 36-year-old was cited in a club announcement in mid-May. Ajax had just missed the championship in the race with PSV Eindhoven.
Alex Kroes, technical director, now said about Heinga: “John is a good coach with enormous commitment. He is ambitious and has developed in the Premier League and the Champions League in recent years. Marijn (Beuker; Sports Head) and I have spoken to him last year and have been in contact with him since then, and we are convinced that he is convinced with him together Marcel will help to improve and build on the progress that has been achieved since last summer, for example with litigation culture and discipline.
Heida said: “I am incredibly looking forward to the start. The last few years in England have been very good. I was able to develop alongside David Moyes and Arne Slot and at the same time take a look behind the scenes of two large clubs. I am ready to continue as a head coach, and I feel honored to get this chance from Ajax.”
