Werder Bremen surprisingly separated from coach Ole Werner and his team of coaches. A successor is apparently already ready.

Werder Bremen separates with the immediate effect of coach Ole Werner. The association officially announced the decision on Tuesday after several media had unanimously reported. Clemens Fritz, Managing Director of Football, said: “Since we need continuity and clarity for the future in the position of head coach, we decided to free Ole.”

“Especially with a view to the squad composition, the further development of the team and the future orientation, it is necessary to be able to plan in the long term in this position,” said Fritz. He thanks Ole Werner “for the outstanding work he did at Werder Bremen” and for the “very trusting cooperation”.

Ole Werner could understand the decision of the association. It was anything but easy for him to take this step, the 37-year-old emphasized. In his work it was always about developing an association. When a certain point has been reached, there are usually two options: changes in the area – or on the coaching position. “It was clear to me that after my contract has ended and then four and a half years, this change in my position needed to make further development possible,” said Werner.

Horst Steffen is traded as a possible successor, currently coach at SV Elversberg. An official confirmation is still pending. Steffen did not comment on his future on Monday evening after the lost Bundesliga relegation against 1. FC Heidenheim (1: 2). “There is still no information from me. I have to process the game first,” he said at the Sky microphone.
