The championship and relegation battle were decided in the Premier League before the last match day. But the race for the Champions League offered high tension.
Five teams and three places: That was the starting point before the last Premier League matchday in the fight for the Champions League. Liverpool and Arsenal already had their tickets safe. After a dramatic Sunday afternoon, it is now clear: CL quarter finalist Aston Villa gets none.
The team of coach Unai Emery lost 0: 2 at Manchester United and was only sixth. Manchester City, FC Chelsea and Newcastle United, however, created the qualification for the premier class. Nottingham Forest ended “empty” with Aston Villa. Villa will play in the Europa League, Nottingham in the Conference League.
Manchester City had the best starting position before the last matchday. And coach Pep Guardiola’s “Skyblues” also showed no nervousness, and FC Fulham hit 2-0 away. İlkay Gündoğan Manchester brought Manchester onto the winning road, scored the lead with with a remarkable fall recoverer in the 21st minute. Erling Haaland then scored in the second round by penalty (72nd).
A particularly large number of eyes were aimed at the direct duel between Nottingham Forest and Chelsea FC, because both teams still had chances of the premier class. Nottingham had home advantage, but could not use it. Levi Colwill scored the only goal of the game and thus led the “Blues” from London to fourth place (50th).
Most of the luck was Newcastle United. Because despite a disappointing performance, the “Magpies” qualified for the Champions League. The 0: 1 defeat against Everton FC in front of a home crowd was deserved, but still hardly hurt. Because Aston Villa lost 0: 2 at Manchester United, which Newcastle gave the advantage due to the better goal difference.
However, the game in Manchester will still deliver some discussion material, because at 0: 0 Villa scored a goal that was revoked by the referee team. An at least controversial decision that coach Unai Emery triggered incomprehension.
