A legendary car by Michael Schumacher is auctioned on the edge of the Formula 1 race in Monaco. He once wrote history in the car.
A Michael Schumacher racing car has never been auctioned for such a sum: the Ferrari F2001, with which the seven -time world champion won the Monaco Grand Prix in 2001, achieved a price of 15.98 million euros at an auction in Monte Carlo.
The car was auctioned on Saturday in the exclusive “Paddock Club” – right on the legendary race track. The auction took place as part of the Grand Prix weekend and was organized by Sotheby’s. It was the first time that such a sale around a Formula 1 race took place.
With the F2001 – more precisely: the chassis 211 – Schumacher not only secured the victory in Monaco, but also laid the foundation for his fourth world championship. That year, Ferrari managed the first successful title defense in the driver and constructor evaluation in Formula 1 history.
A previously unknown buyer prevailed at the auction. Part of the proceeds flows to the “Keep Fighting Foundation”. The foundation is committed to the continuation of Michael Schumacher’s charity.
In recent years, exhibits from Schumacher’s career have been auctioned again and again. The amount now achieved is a new record for one of his racing cars. Before that, the record was 14.8 million euros – so much was paid for the F2003 in 2022, with which Schumacher also became world champion.
However, the global auction record for a racing car was not broken. This holds this a Mercedes W196 streamliner, which was auctioned in February for 51.16 million euros. The vehicle dates from the 1950s and was driven by Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss.
Schumacher has not performed publicly since his serious ski accident in December 2013. Since then, information about his state of health has been rare.
