The 73-year-old Jan in ‘t V. from Oss died in Nairobi last Saturday. His lawyer announced this after questions from Omroep Brabant. Since November 2023, the man was detained on suspicion of sexual abuse. The Kenyan judge had imposed him in prison for ten years.
In ‘t V., that punishment appealed, his case was still in full swing at the time of his death.
It is not yet clear what he died of, research is still being done. According to the Kenyan newspaper Daily Nation, he died in the Kennyata National Hospital after he fell ill in prison. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also confirms that a Dutchman died in detention in Kenya.
The man in Kenya was suspected of sexual abuse of a minor, spreading child pornography and so -called sexting. That is the distribution or sharing of sexually tinted messages or photos or videos of yourself via mobile phones or other media.
Jan In ‘t V. denied the charges that were made against him. He himself, by e-mail, told Omroep Brabant that according to him there was corruption and that the most important witness had withdrawn his statement. However, the court ruled that in V. was guilty.
Pounds of weight
In V., in detention, health problems were struggling. In his own words, he had lost tens of kilos of weight and suffered from seriously low blood pressure. In May 2024 he also ended up in the hospital because of his deteriorated health.
Last Thursday his case came to court again. His lawyer tried to get him free temporarily so that he could get better care. The judge decided that he was not allowed to wait for his sentence outside the prison.
In ‘t V., a foundation had and handed out adjustable glasses to people in developing countries. Before that he regularly traveled to Africa.
