Cyber attacks are now indispensable in society. Whether it is about the port of Rotterdam, a hospital or a defense location. The attacks now have an impact on everyone. Europe has to stir itself emphatically in the field of cyber security, says Minister Ruben Brekelmans.

He spoke today in The Hague during the final days of the Cyber Investor Days, the largest Pan-European cyber security event. Central was the motto ‘CyberSecurity Made in Europe’. This contains the future, the minister sees. “But Europe has to grow up quickly. We have to develop digital resilience and build our own capacities.”

In that respect, Brekelmans spoke to the right audience. The room was full of specialists from start-ups, scale-ups and companies and other cyber professionals. “In spaces like this, our future is being worked on,” the minister said. “People like you build the tools that we need to protect our infrastructure and our way of life.”

Not close the world

Europe has the capacities and opportunities to play a leading role. “We have the talent, the budget and the institutions. But that does not mean that we have to close ourselves from the rest of the world. On the contrary, it means that we have to be confident to collaborate with the best, wherever in the world. We should not be afraid to learn from others. Let’s be proud of what we have to offer.”

Today’s breakthrough can be the protection of tomorrow, according to the minister. He therefore referred again to the motto of the Cyberdagen. “Cyber security made in Europe is not only a catchy slogan. It is a mission born out of necessity.”
