Thomas Kessler will permanently take on sporting responsibility at 1. FC Köln. The club announced this on Thursday.

Accordingly, Kessler officially becomes sports director. His contract runs until 2027. After the dismissal of managing director Sport Christian Keller, Kessler had already completed the role in the interim. His first official act was the obligation of coach Friedhelm Funkel, who led FC to the Bundesliga promotion in the last two season games.

President Wolf: “Clarification of the coaching question urgent task”

“We are firmly convinced that Thomas Kessler is the right man to permanently bear the sporting responsibility for 1. FC Cologne,” said FC President Werner Wolf in a club announcement. “His first and most urgent task will be the clarification of the coaching question in order to promote the squad planning for a competitive Bundesliga season in parallel. He will work closely with the management.”

Kessler was pleased with the trust he had placed in him: “I am convinced that we will be successful together – and I look forward to taking on responsibility and actively helping to shape sport.”
